I killed my friends dog today?

I went to visit him for a while and as I was leaving his dog got out some how and I ran it over. He had this dog for 9 years and I feel so awful about this. I know I can't replace his dog but I did offer to have him buried at a pet cemetery and that I would do anything that I could to ease his pain. I will also be giving him a check for $1, 750 tomorrow because that's what he bought this dog for. The dog was a AKC Border Collie with champion bloodline. I really don't want this to break up our friendship. What more can I do to make up for this awful thing i've done?
